Fly Free transforms a vintage playing card into a small surreal world. The card has been hand-burned to create a hole through its centre, revealing a cloudy sky beyond. From this opening, a hand reaches out as a pigeon flies beyond the confines of the card — a playful image of escape, freedom and breaking through the boundaries that contain us.
The imagery comes from a 1940s issue of Picture Post, specifically an article celebrating the pigeon airforce during WWII. I was drawn to the extraordinary story behind these wartime messenger pigeons, and the idea of taking an image created for a very different purpose and giving it a new, unexpected meaning.
Handmade using vintage printed imagery, a genuine vintage playing card and a combination of collage and hand-burning techniques, Fly Free is a completely unique, one-of-a-kind original artwork.
